Cash for Cartoonists: Review
Cash for Cartoonists is written by DJ Coffman and is an intermediate level guide, assuming that most pros will already know these things, to making more money from your artistic abilities. I’ve been meaning to write this review for about a week. Oddly enough, as a wannabe writer, I actually quite dislike words, which I assure you C4C has no shortage of. So it took me a while.
The eBook itself is about 24 pages that covers 15 different sources of potential revenue for you as a freelance cartoonist/illustrator. It also covers topics like prepairing yourself with proper equipment, information, and how to approach potential clients.
The book is targeted at people on my level of experience and knowledge of the cartooning/illustrating industry. So, I can say first hand that I learned a thing or two that honestly got me thinking about why I haven’t been doing some of these things all along.
You can find out more about the eBook here where you can also watch an introduction video from DJ himself here:

$47 for 24 pages? For an e-book? I think DJ has figured out how to make some cash for at least one cartoonist…

Did you actually buy this thing, or did he comp you a copy so you’d post about it? I’m amazed anyone would actually shell out cah for something this sleazy.

My copy was comped. In its defense, it comes with coaching from DJ. Honestly, he does good work, whether you agree or not with the way he conducts himself online. Also, I remember paying 30 bucks for a membership to Webcomics.com … and I know you have too Tom. What people decide to pay for is their business.
I’m not trying to attack you with this post.. just saying that I don’t want to be the next Daily Cartoonist (:

Honestly, you need to disclose the fact that you were comped a copy upfront. That’s a HUGE difference from you buying it. What I paid for is irrelevant, and so is webcomics.com – we’re not talking about that. We’re talking about THIS product. I didn’t write an article telling people something was good, but you did – so you need to provide full disclosure.
And not that it’s any of your business, but no, I didn’t pay for a membership on webcomics.com. It was gifted to me.
I’m aware of the “coaching” aspect. I’m just not sure if that is worth the money. It doesn’t look like it in my own opinion from what I’ve seen.
This is the kind of thing that rubs people the wrong way. A person selling something gives you a copy to promote. Because it’s free, you promote it and don’t disclose that it was in fact, free. Whether you like it or not is secondary to that.

Hey, thanks for the review. If some creators don’t think it’s worth the price, that’s totally understandable, there are many things out there I wouldn’t pay for but others find of value. I wanted to address a couple points here in defense of my product…
#1 Page count: as the reviewer and anyone who has read the ebook would agree, while the total page count is 25 pages, it’s double and triple columned at 9pt type. Since it’s a digital book I designed it to pack as much information into as many little pages as possible to keep file size low and for the creators who like to print their pdfs. I’ve estimated the total amount of words in a regular ebook with no art, it would end up being around a 60 page all text ebook if done in standard font size.
#2 There’s nothing underhanded going on here. I’ve been giving away knowledge and helping other creators for years and I love talking about the business. I decided to launch this with a full on coaching service so I can spend more of my time doing one-on-one consultation with creators and the feedback this past week has been great.
Also there’s absolutely nothing underhanded about selecting people for comp copies for review. I put out a call on twitter asking any reviewers if they wanted comp copies for review, he could have totally trashed the project and I have no control over that, so it’s taking a big risk on my part if I were publishing something that wasn’t of value.
Putting all the petty personal attacks and insinuations aside, The bottom line for me is, I want to see more cartoonists earning more money. Mainly because I love living my dream and I want others to be able to do it too. Sure you can do that without my ebook or learning from others, and I’m not opposed to that. This is just another resource for creators. Believe me, nobody is getting rich from this, if anything the costs will just end up covering my coaching time, it’s by no means a full time business on it’s own. And I love doing it, so expect some FREE ebooks from me real soon too.
