So, if you haven’t heard by now, Mark Waid has launched an “experiment in new-media publishing” over at http://thrillbent.com. While I take umbrage with the description of the project because… webcomics have been successful for over a decade now, I have to say that I support the effort. Though, since the site is in it’s infancy, I reserve the right to change my opinion about it being an experiment. Who knows what they might have in store.

Content:

There are currently two full issues of comics on the site. The first is in the superhero genre, titled “Insufferable”, looks to be an ongoing story. It tells the tale of a heroes sidekick that grew up, struck out on his own, and became a bit of a douche.

The second book available to read is called “Luther”. It’s a one-shot set in a post-apocalyptic world and follows a couple characters that clean up zombie roadkill. It’s not in the vein of The Walking Dead or anything like that. Just read it, it’s worth your time.

Presentation:

The site is fairly simple but that’s nothing to complain about. I’m not sure exactly what the comic navigator is but it’s wonderful to use and is also mobile friendly. The way it’s set up allows for dramatic pauses between certain panels and really lets them control the pace and experience of the story.

Overall:

Honestly, I have zero complaints and that comes from a person who is all about independent projects and has little to no loyalty to DC or Marvel books. So, welcome to the internet Mr. Waid. It’ll be interesting to see what you do next.

You may remember just over a week ago when a tweet war erupted between Red 5 Comics, Brian Clevinger, and a couple of comic retail shops – recapped here: Bleeding Cool: This is Twitter war!!!!!!!!

Today, Brian Clevinger (8 Bit Theater & Atomic Robo) posted (via twitter) this, as an addition to his argument:

There are ~3,794,101 sq mi in the United States. There are ~3,000 comic book shops. That’s one shop per ~1,264 sq mi. This ignores that most cities have multiple shops. Which just makes the math worse in non-urban areas.

Digital comics distribution isn’t a replacement for LCBS. It’s an option for people who didn’t really have one before (mail order can be iffy). If you have a great local shop, by all means, SUPPORT THAT BASTARD. Great comic stores are gems and valuable parts of their communities.

Not to mention other places like…the rest of the world. Availability is what will keep the comic industry strong and possibly grow into new areas.

As far as Webcartoonists.com is concerned, the move of comics to a digital format is the natural progression. Especially when large amounts of retailing has already made the move to the web. Anything you want is available online…why shouldn’t your comics be too?

Cash for Cartoonists is written by DJ Coffman and is an intermediate level guide, assuming that most pros will already know these things, to making more money from your artistic abilities. I’ve been meaning to write this review for about a week. Oddly enough, as a wannabe writer, I actually quite dislike words, which I assure you C4C has no shortage of. So it took me a while.

The eBook itself is about 24 pages that covers 15 different sources of potential revenue for you as a freelance cartoonist/illustrator. It also covers topics like prepairing yourself with proper equipment, information, and how to approach potential clients.

The book is targeted at people on my level of experience and knowledge of the cartooning/illustrating industry. So, I can say first hand that I learned a thing or two that honestly got me thinking about why I haven’t been doing some of these things all along.

You can find out more about the eBook here where you can also watch an introduction video from DJ himself here:

In all honesty if it wasn’t for CAD there would be no Webcartoonists.com as CAD was the first webcomic I stumbled upon and completely on accident too.

The website has changed a few times over the years and with the latest change a few sections have been lost from sight. Though, they’re still around just a little broken. I’m talking about the old convention reports:

Link: Cad-Comic: Conventions Reports

The most recent date back to 2007 but they’re still relevant and the charm is still there. I also find them to be a good source of inspiration when trying to get charged up for making my own webcomics.
